The Woodlands and Houston Workshops

Join us for a week of photography workshops in conjunction with The Woodlands Camera Club in friendly The Woodlands, Texas.

The Woodlands Camera Club is hosting and sponsoring a 5-day series of workshop in the greater Houston, Texas area. These workshops are open to all photographers including shooters from other camera clubs, other cities, other states, and other countries. The workshops are camera agnostic, so bring your Sony, Canon, Nikon or any other camera and learn from the pros. We can’t wait to see you!

Mike is a professional photographer based in Washington State. He is the author of ten books on photography, including The Enthusiast’s Guide to DIY Photography, The Nikon Autofocus System, Thousands of Images Now What? and The Nikon Creative Lighting System. He’s a veteran workshop leader, having taught hundreds of workshops all over the world.

Rick Hulbert

Rick is an international award winning and published professional teacher of photography and practicing architect. He has been a frequent lecturer, and seminar panel participant on 4 continents. Richard has been named a Fellow in the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada which is among the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a member. He is a former President of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia. Notably, Richard is also an Academician in the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, one of the youngest members ever to be elected to that august body. As a photographer and architect, Richard has won awards or has been published every year over the last four decades.

Rick and Mike will be teaching two presentations on photographic technique with one class in the morning and one in the afternoon. Signing up for this workshop gets you into both classes. These sessions are lecture style with both Mike and Rick presenting content and working live. Each class will have Q&A portions.

10:00 – 12:45 – Candid Photography of People in Urban Settings (Rick Hulbert)
Learn about the essence of candid street photography and the kinds of qualities that professional photo journalists seek to embody in their images for publication.

What you will learn:
– Learn how “shy and retiring” photographers can photograph strangers

– Learn what kind of cameras, lenses, and equipment are available and best suited for candid street photography.

– Learn how to predict, in advance, the best times and locations for candid street photography

– Learn how to incorporate built structures into your candid street photographs

– Learn how to take your photography to the next level, regardless of whether you are a beginner, an enthusiast, or a professional photographer.

1:45 – 4:30 – One Flash Portraiture and Lightroom CC Portrait Retouching (Mike Hagen).
During this live shoot with a model, Mike Hagen will show how to create professional and compelling images with a single flash. He will be tethered into Lightroom Classic CC and will then show how to perform portrait retouching using the tools within Lightroom Classic CC.

What you will learn:
– Learn how to use a single flash to make beautiful portraits

– Learn how to use a variety of light modifiers

– Learn how to work with a live model in the studio

– Learn how to tether your camera to Lightroom Classic CC

Our visual world is rapidly moving to video. Have you noticed that just about everything we read or watch is infused with multi-media content these days? There’s a reason why … video and motion graphics are engaging and attention-grabbing. Learn how to communicate in this medium by using software tools you already own. Rather than showing a bunch of photos at your next family get together, impress everyone with a stunning multimedia video presentation of your most recent trip.

You will learn:
– Processing images in Lightroom CC

– Creating movement in your still photos

– Using video editing programs like iMovie and Windows Movie Creator

– Working with vertical and horizontal images

– Incorporating video clips into your media

– How to find great music … legally!

Learn best practices for photographing historic places while traveling. Rick will cover details on what to look for, finding hidden gems, and field technique.

– Learn how to portray 3-dimensional structures on a 2-dimensional screen or print

– Learn how to create images that are most appropriate for documenting heritage structures.

– Learn how to get the most benefit of wide angle lenses and tilt-shift lenses when photographing heritage structures.

2-Day Workshop Track 1 – Architectural and Urban Photography that Sings … From Compositional Harmony to Image Editing Performance

This is a small sized workshop for a maximum of 10 participants. Rick Hulbert will work closely with the participants in a hands-on workshop with detailed instruction and feedback.

– Learn how to capture a wide dynamic range of light both day and night in an urban context.

– Learn how to predict the best times and locations for “great light.”

– Learn the basic elements of photographic composition that respect the history of drawing and painting.

Desired Gear:

In addition to any camera and lens(es) you want to bring, consider bringing a tripod that will ensure a stable platform for your camera and lens … ideally including a remote release, cabled, delayed, or otherwise.

Whether you bring a point-and-shoot camera, a new mirrorless camera, an SLR, or the camera on your smartphone, you need to have a camera that you know how to use.

 

2-Day Workshop Track 2 – The Art of Travel Photography

Cost: $425.00 for TWCC members, $475.00 for non-members

Do you want to up your travel photography game? During this workshop, we will dive deep into the process of telling a great story through your travel images. Mike will detail the methods he uses to prepare for beautiful photographs when traveling.

This 2-day workshop is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. Mike Hagen will work closely with the participants in a hands-on workshop with detailed instruction and feedback. We will mix classroom instruction with field photography to help you produce a stunning visual narrative from your own travels. Our field photography sessions will be in the area surrounding The Woodlands and Houston. We will incorporate a variety of urban subjects, natural environments and people photography with the intent of creating a beautiful travel portfolio of the areas we visit.
