Today, Nikon announces the D7100 DX-format HD-SLR. Nikon is referring to this as their new flagship DX camera which means we’ll need to wait a while longer for the D300/D300s replacements. I’ve been using the D7000 for a number of years and really like its smaller size and snappy performance. It looks as if the D7100 is a nice upgrade over the D7000 and will be a very strong performer. The camera will be a smaller than the D600 FX camera, but will contain almost the exact feature set from the D600, but with an improved autofocus system.

Some of the specs that are important to me:

  • 24.1 MP
  • Magnesium alloy body
  • 51 point autofocus with 15 cross pattern sensors. The cross pattern sensors will focus with f/8 lenses just like the D4 and D800 cameras.
  • 6 fps (7 fps in crop mode with 12-bit RAW)
  • 1.3x crop of DX frame option
  • Two SD card slots
  • 100% viewfinder
Price for the body only should be about $1,200 and price for the body + lens kit should be about $1,600.
